Man Charged with Murder outside Nursing Home Sentenced

July 21, 2009

The man who beat and strangled a woman outside of a nursing home in Washington State was sentenced today to more than 16 years in prison. The killer, Joseph Njonge of Kenya, was accused of strangling the wife of a nursing home resident as she went out to her car. Her body was later found in the trunk, with DNA evidence underneath her fingernails.

The victim’s husband was a resident at the Garden Terrace Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence. His Costco card was found in the killer’s wallet after the attack. Throughout the trial, Njonge claimed that he was innocent. However, he was found guilty of second-degree murder.

It is expected that when Njonge’s prison sentence ends, he will be deported back to Kenya. The son of the woman who was slain says that he misses his mother but that he is working hard to forgive Njonge. However, many other family and community members are demanding justice.
