Elder abuse is a growing crime in this country, yet there are few formal studies to show just how serious it is. While there are up to a million reports of elder abuse every year, it is estimated that there are as many as 12 times that number of cases. The problem is that while many senior adults are put into situations meant to care for them, too often the people themselves are unable to sufficiently describe what is happening to them, they are too embarrassed to report abuse, or they are intimidated into thinking it is normal care. It's vital that if you know someone who is exhibiting changes in behavior that you can't explain or that concern you, you investigate their living situation. Examine them physically, look into their finances, and talk to their doctors to be sure they're getting the care they deserve. If you suspect they are not, contact your state Adult Protective Services Agency and call an elder abuse lawyer to help you ensure their rights.
